Basel has the strategy to provide good framework conditions for companies and research institutions as well as to provide a high quality of life. Thus Basel carries out a number of projects within this strategy, such as
• To attract and retain qualified people, the canton Basel-Stadt runs the project “Welcome to Basel” – The seven steps to get at home at Basel. Basel is commited to give every newcomer to this town a warm welcome. Newcomers get all the information they need to settle down in Basel and to get curious about their new environment.
• To be attractive for highly qualified people and companies in life sciences, there is an overall strategy of various actors to strengthen the international competitiveness and quality of the University of Basel and the University for Applied Sciences of Northwestern Switzerland, particularly in the area life sciences (strengthen of the life-science disciplines).

  • I-net (Innovation networks)

i-net Basel is a public/private ownership which aims at encouraging innovation, entrepreneurship and value creation in the canton of Basel-Stadt. The key element of i-net Basel is the network of entrepreneurs, scientists and organisations promoting local business. Members make use of their contacts, experience and expertise to offer advice to other members and start-up companies.

  • Strengthen of the life-science disciplines

There is an overall strategy in the region of Basel (of various actors – political, academic and private) to strengthen the international competitiveness of the University of Basel and the University for Applied Sciences of Northwestern Switzerland, particularly in the area of life science. The key elements are cooperation between the regional bodies to expand the funding body of the universities or certain institutes and cooperation between the university and the business sector.

Attracting Investment

  • BaselArea

BaselArea was created in 1996 to bring the economic promotion activities of several Swiss cantons together. It’s main objective is to attract companies to the cantons of Basel City and Basel Country through various activities, including advising and supporting new companies.

  • Round table family-friendly region

The round table family-friendly region was created by 16 economic associations, entreprises and administrative agencies from the region of Basel and aims at companies and employees that are already in town. Different activities and measures, such as information campaigns, events and workshops or forums are run to support companies in order to implement a family-friendly policy.
